BEES & BEYOND
“If bees disappear off the face of the earth, man would only have four years to live.” - Einstein
Bees are important to our ecosystem, but why? In this course, students will investigate the life cycle of a bee and learn about their anatomy. We will learn how honey is made, how bees communicate, and how they help pollinate plants and flowers. Perhaps, the bee-st question is why are bees disappearing in large numbers?
Students will become junior scientists and meet a professional Beekeeper from the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center to talk about the basic needs of bees, find out ways we can do help bees in our yard, and how to identify the queen bee. We will also get a taste of honey that is harvested from the Center’s Hives. We will end the course learning how to create an easy Needle Felt Beehive from Ms. Natasha (from Esther's Place). This course will leave students exploring nature around them and teach them how to identify pollinating plants.
